MLK Day of Service - A Day ON, not a Day Off

Stay tuned for 2025 event details! Read on to learn about last year's event.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived his life serving others. Following his example, millions of Americans serve on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, including Timberline students and families. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

January 15, 2024 will mark Timberline’s fourth annual MLK Day ON, Not a Day Off day of service. Together we will work to improve the lives of others, build community, and learn about important local and global issues. This event is free and open to Timberline students and their families. Pre-registration is required.

We will be working on several projects and participants will have the opportunity to choose which projects to work on. Projects will include, but are not limited to:

  • Sandwich making for the Union Gospel Mission’s nightly Search and Rescue operation. We will prepare 400 sandwiches for those experiencing homelessness. www.ugm.org
  • Stuffing and sewing of toy bears for local refugee children, a project of Dolls of Hope. www.dollsofhope.org
  • Completion of fleece hats for local children and women in need.
  • Preparation of the Birthday Candle game for Birthday Dreams, a local non-profit that coordinates birthday celebrations for children living in shelters. www.birthdaydreams.org
  • Assembly of hygiene packs for Essentials First, a local organization striving to ensure Washingtonians everywhere have access to hygiene items. www.essentialsfirst.org
  • Cat toys and cage blankets will be made for furry friends at the Seattle Humane Society. www.seattlehumane.org
  • Creation of postcards for the Students Rebuild annual project, benefitting organizations supporting refugees around the world. www.studentsrebuild.org
